Hastings did not prove to be particularly hospitable to the Boone Central/Newman Grove volleyball team last week.
The Cardinals made a pair of trips to Adams Central for competition and were able to bring home just one victory in five matches.
Inconsistency was the main problem for the Cardinals, who dropped to 6-10, but Coach Susan Roberts said there were again flashes of the team’s potential.
BC/NG opened the week in triangular action, dropping a 22-25, 15-25 decision to host Adams Central. St. Paul handed the Cards a 25-14, 22-25, 25-22 defeat in the nightcap.
BC/NG returned to Hastings Saturday and went 1-2 in the Adams Central Invite. The Cards lost a hard-fought battle with Superior 25-21, 19-25, 20-25; defeated Centennial 25-20, 25-23 and were nipped by Sandy Creek 25-23, 21-25, 25-19.
“Despite our 1-2 record, we were really pleased with a variety of things,” Roberts commented. “We served and received well over 90 percent on the day and really gave ourselves a chance to run our offense. We attacked the ball a lot in all three matches, but just didn’t do it as efficiently as we needed to. We struggled a little with timing and tipped a little too much – just didn’t throw a lot of heavy hitting at our opponents.
“I am confident we will be able to put all the pieces together. We have the ability to attack stronger and once we get that going, we’ll be coming out ahead in tight matches.”
