It was one of those weeks where the Boone Central/Newman Grove volleyball team just couldn’t get over the hump.
Playing from behind and playing from ahead, the Cardinals were unable to get the winning points when needed and saw a recent skid stretch to six losses in seven games.
The Cardinals hosted a tough Ord (16-4) squad in Albion Tuesday and were put on their heels from the start in a 5-25, 14-25, 20-25 loss.
“It was a tough night for all three squads playing a talented group from Ord,” BC/NG Coach Susan Roberts acknowledged. “The varsity struggled to keep up with Ord’s pace, though we played better and better as the night progressed. We just couldn’t slow down their attack.”
BC/NG and Battle Creek engaged in a tough, tight Mid-State Conference battle Thursday at Newman Grove, with the Bravettes stroming back from an 0-2 deficit to win in five sets.
“We came out playing very well and executing consistently throughout the first 2 and 2/3rds sets. We had the game in hand in set three with a 23-19 lead, but a string of unforced errors allowed Battle Creek to tie and eventually win the set,” Roberts commented. “We continued to play very competitively in set four and again it came down to the wire, 24-16.
“In the final set, we again let a string of errors help Battle Creek to a 6-1 lead and, although we fought back to tie at 7-7 and again at 11-11, we just didn’t execute when we needed to.”
The disappointing final was 25-14, 25-22, 23-25, 24-26, 11-15.
