Wow! What a day!
Hosting the 2014 Mid-State Conference cross country championships, the Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals were right in the middle of brilliant competition and drama, claiming the girls’ team title – by a single point! – and placing runner-up in the boys’ race – again, by just one point!
In fact, Cardinal Coach Tom Dickey seemed almost dazed by the day’s events.
“I’m not really sure what happened, but something good went on!” Dickey joked.
“Nearly every one of our runners had a personal or season best. We had near-perfect conditions to run and the competition was wonderful,” he continued. “We set some simple goals to shoot for – and it seemed they simply got done!”
It took those best efforts for the Lady Cards to become 2014 Mid-State champions.
Kendra Gonzalez led the way with a strong fourth-place performance and teammates Sheldon Beierman, Taylor Starman and Christina Stopak soon came barreling down the final stretch to finish 8th-10th. Catherine Weeder was was close behind in 14th.
Gonzalez established a new senior and school course record with her time of 19:52.
The Boone Central/Newman Grove boys came oh-so-close to making it a 2014 double for the Cardinals.
Andrew Rasmussen raced home in third place individually and teammate Cody Shanno joined him in the top ten, placing seventh. Thomas Hosford and Sam Stopak steamed home in 11th and 12th to give the Cards a 33 team total – a single digit behind the O’Neill Eagles.
