BC/NG dominates Ashland-Greenwood 54-14 to win C1 state title

BC/NG football team hoists the championship trophy after their big victory Tuesday. With an exclamation point!
Led by senior All-State QB Wyatt Mazour’s astounding performance, the Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals completed an undefeated season Tuesday by running roughshod over Ashland-Greenwood in the Class C1 State Championship Game at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.
The Cardinals gave Coach Arnie Johnson his second state title in the final game of his career, racing to a 34-7 halftime lead and never letting up in a 54-14 victory that capped a 13-0 campaign.
BC/NG enjoyed the wind advantage and field position in the first quarter and took full advantage. The Cards took over for the first time after a short Ashland-Greenwood punt into a stiff breeze and set the tone from the outset. Mazour’s 35-yard dash took the ball inside A-G’s 10 yard line and he followed with an 8-yard TD pass to Zac Glidden.
BC/NG recovered a fumble on Ashland-Greenwood’s ensuing possession and Mazour went right to work. Mazour passed 13 yards to Travis Kennedy, ran for 16 more, then lofted a perfect touchdown pass to Kennedy.
Ashland-Greenwood came back with its own score to close the gap to 13-7, but it was as close as the Bluejays would get the rest of the contest.
BC/NG took possession of a short kick and, on first down, Mazour weaved through the Bluejay defense for a 59-yard TD with 16 seconds remaining in the first period. Moments later, the Cards recovered another fumble and Mazour delivered a 35-yard touchdown gallop. BC/NG wrapped up the half with a 24-yard TD run by its elusive QB.
Ashland-Greenwood’s only glint of hope came in the first half of the third quarter when they converted a Mazour fumble into its second touchdown.
Mazour answered right back, however, with a spectacular 82-yard pnt return touchdown that made the score 41-14. From there, the Cardinals controlled action until reserves for both teams finished up.
