The Boone Central/Newman Grove JV placed 8th of 11 teams in a very competitive Newman Grove Holiday Tournament Saturday.
Norfolk JV 1 garnered the team championship with 164 points. Millard South JV (127.5), Nebraska Christian (111), Fremont JV (107.5) and Ponca (107) were other teams in triple-digits.
“The Newman Grove Holiday Tournament has a nice mix of Class A and B JV teams, with Class D varsity teams,” commented Cardinal Coach Dale Bonge. “The larger schools send predominantly JV wrestlers, but include a few varsity wrestlers who have missed earlier meets with injury or illness. Plus, there is often not much difference between varsity and JV wrestlers in some weight classes.”
Against some stout competition, Boone Central/Newman Grove had several wrestlers medal Saturday.
Nolan Wondercheck reeled off a 5-0 record to win the 120-pound gold and freshman Garrett Cornwell took second at 126 with a 4-1 day. Sam Stopak was fourth at 132, Trey Schafer (138) and Ryan Thiem (170) each placed fifth and Levi Krueger (160) took seventh.
“Nolan had an excellent performance with four pins,” Bonge noted. “Garrett continues to show improvement. Often, as a match progresses, he gets stronger and wrestles better.
“Sam wrestled for the first time since opening weekend. Both losses were to the same guy. The first was 11-6, but Sam closed the gap in the second meeting – with the match tied 3-3, he was reversed in the final seconds to fall by two points.”
