It was big, and it was tough.
The Cardinal wrestling program hosted the annual Boone Central Invitational in Albion Saturday, with Class C #1 David City capturing the team title in a rugged field. Boone Central/Newman Grove finished 11th in the 15-team event and had eight medalists, although no Cardinal placed higher than fourth.
“Our invitational featured a strong field, including four state-rated teams and around 35 rated individuals,” BC/NG Coach Dale Bonge commented. “Top teams included Class C #1 and #2, David City and O’Neill, Class B #4 Ashland-Greenwood, and Class D #7 Neligh-Oakdale.
“We managed eight placewinners, with Cody Shanno leading the way with fourth in the 132-pound class.”
Bonge was pleased, in large part, with BC/NG perforamnces, but felt the Cardinals also left some wins on the mats.
“In the semi-finals, Cody had #1 Marvin of O’Neill tied at 5-5 and in trouble with a nice throw, and nearly pinned him, before Marvin turned the tables and pinned Cody,” Bonge said. “Ty Groth, Steven Arreguin and Joel Meyer all placed fifth. Steven battled a #4 kid to a scoreless first period before falling late in the second. Joel majored a kid that had pinned him earlier in the season.
“Nolan Wondercheck, Andrew Rasmussen and Jacob Krings placed sixth and Andy King placed eighth. Jesse Osantowski also picked up a win.
“The young men all wrestled hard, but mental mistakes cost us opportunities in several matches.”
