Mid-State Conference schools and fans grew accustomed to seeing championship Cardinals each spring as Boone Central strung together four consecutive girls track and field titles from 2009-2012.
After placing fourth the past two seasons, the Lady Cards returned to the top Saturday in Albion, outscoring Crofton and seven other Mid-State schools to win the 2015 girls championship.
The Boone Central/Newman Grove boys also had a tremendous day, finishing as conference runners-up for a second straight season, 20 points behind a powerful Battle Creek squad.
The performances on this year’s first day of track and field competition where heat was a factor left Cardinal Coach Kris Pestel speaking in terms of superlatives.
“The Mid-State is always extremely competitive, and we had a great conference meet!” Pestel praised. “It was the first really warm day of the spring and we weren’t sure how the kids would respond, but they responded amazingly!
“Our kids were able to work through the heat and compete at an extremely high level. Once again, I can’t say enough about our kids and their competitive spirit. Regardless of external influences, they always dig deep inside themselves and give everything they have.
“They left everything on the track and proved they are at the top of a great conference!”
