The Albion Cornerstone Juniors and Seniors traveled to Shelton Sunday for American Legion baseball action, dropping a pair of decisions to the hosts.
Shelton opened the doubleheader with a methodical 8-2 win over the Cornerstone Juniors.
Cornerstone actually grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Zach Diessner doubled and scored on Cody Nelson’s groundout, but from there Shelton pitcher Korbin Hynes was pretty much in control. Dylan Gentrup tripled to score Matt Schmitz in the fourth, but Albion could muster just four additional hits – all singles – and had runners stranded at third base in the fifth and sixth.
Shelton scored all the runs it would need in a four-run third, capitalizing on four walks, two Albion errors and a double by Devin Stroh.
Despite the loss that dropped Cornerstone’s record to 3-5, Seniors Coach Lowell Imus was generally pleased with a well-played contest against the defending Class C state champion.
Albion again seized an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, Travis Kennedy and Colton Pelster delivering consecutive singles and Kennedy scoring on Keaton Henry’s base hit.
Shelton took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth and the Albion Seniors tied the score in the bottom of the frame before the contest became a pitching and defense duel. Cornerstone’s Kennedy matched zeroes with Shelton’s Taryn Hawks and Garreth Stroh until Scott Ketteler took over for the 10th.
Jordan Richardson drew a walk to lead off the top of the inning, advanced with a stolen base and additional Albion error and scored the go-ahead run on Hynes’ groundout.
Joel Meyer walked to lead off the bottom of the inning and Jackson Meyer followed with a single, but Stroh then set down three straight, including consecutive strikeouts that finally ended the contest.
