Hot start for fair again

Walt Hoefer of Albion competes in the tractor pull.>As usual, a heat wave kicked in for opening weekend of the Boone County Fair, limiting attendance at several of the outdoor events.
Afternoon temperatures were well into the 90s, with heat indexes over 100. Some moderation of temperatures was in the forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Air conditioned spaces at the fairgrounds — the Boone County Event Center and Casey Building — were in high demand for the early fair activities, but there were still plenty of events outdoors.
Saturday outdoor events were the barbecue cookoff and tractor pulls. Sunday featured the annual fair parade with 72 entries and the Travis Wizardry Magic Show and talent show in the evening. Monday was Kids Day in the afternoon, followed in the evening by the combine demolition derby, two-car chain race and trailer race. Tuesday was the senior day program in the afternoon, with the Shane Thome Memorial Race in the evening. The country music concert featuring Jack Ingram and Old Dominion will close out the fair on Wednesday night.Somewhere in that cloud of smoke is a combine.
