The Boone Central/Newman Grove softball team broke open a seesaw battle with an eight-run fifth inning and defeated host Schuyler 17-9 for the Cardinals’ first victory of the 2015 season Aug. 27.
BC/NG scored two runs in each of the first three innings, but the Warriors edged in front 7-6 with four in the bottom of the third. The Cardinals added three in the fourth and Schuyler answered with a pair in the bottom of the frame to knot the score at 9-9.
Boone Central/Newman Grove followed with its eight-run blitz in the fifth and shut the Warriors down in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.
Boone Central/Newman Grove competed in the Wisner-Pilger Tournament Saturday, finishing with a 1-2 record.
The Cardinals lost their tourney opener 11-3 to Polk County. Polk County held a 4-2 lead after three innings, then took control with a five-run fourth inning.
Host Wisner-Pilger grabbed an early lead and defeated Boone Central/Newman Grove 12-5. The Gators scored three runs in each of the first two innings to take a 6-0 lead and sealed the decision with a four-run fifth after BC/NG scored three in the top of the frame.
BC/NG finished its week on a high note, defeating Lincoln Southwest 6-3 in a neutral tournament game. Tisthammer hurled three scoreless innings and Kaumans allowed just one earned run over four innings. Taylor Olnes, Keiley Tisthammer, Boyd and Kaumans all had two hits for the Cards. Boyd scored two runs in the contest and drove in two.
