The Boone Central/Newman Grove girls cross country team, defending Class C state champion, had an impressive start to the 2015 season, while a young Cardinal boys squad got its feet wet in Friday’s Boone Central Invitational at the Albion Country Club.
On a sultry afternoon that made running conditions difficult, the Card girls placed second to Columbus and senior Ashlynn Baker, a veteran state track qualifier but newcomer to cross country, finished an impressive fourth individually. Thomas Hosford (14th) was the leading runner for the BC/NG boys, who finished sixth.
“I thought the first meet was a big success!,” exclaimed BC/NG Coach Tom Dickey. “With the weather being so rough, I expected some pretty scared kids. But, that didn’t seem to show – they all ran pretty aggressively and as a team. We’ll make some good progress in the next couple weeks now that everyone has an idea what racing is like.”
