Albion man dies in grain bin accident

Edwin KarelA 79-year-old Albion man died in a grain bin accident Thursday afternoon, Sept. 17, at a feedlot northwest of town.
The body of Edwin L. Karel of Albion was recovered from a bin at Johnson’s feed lot near 240th Avenue by Albion Fire & Rescue personnel.
Boone County Sheriff Denny Johnson said emergency personnel were called to the scene shortly after 2 p.m. after a neighbor had noticed that corn being augered from the bin was overfilling a grain truck, and the driver could not be located.
Rescue personnel searched the area. They also probed the grain in the bin and cut openings in the bin to release the corn in an attempt to find Karel.
The victim apparently became trapped in moving grain after he entered the bin to loosen corn that was not feeding properly to the auger, Sheriff Johnson said.
Karel’s body was found and removed from the bin about 45 minutes after rescue personnel arrived. He was declared dead at the scene.
Visitation is planned Monday, Sept. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Levander Funeral Home. A private inurnment service will be held at a later date.
