The Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals opened their 2016-17 season in impressive fashion this past weekend.
Boone Central/Newman Grove tipped off the new campaign Friday at Hartington Cedar Catholic, always a tough trip and challenging place to play, and outfought the Trojans for a 57-46 victory.
BC/NG got off to a strong start in the contest, racing to a 17-10 lead by the end of the first quarter, and held on to a 30-26 advantage at halftime The Cardinals took a six-point edge into the final quarter and outscored the hosts 13-8 in crunch time to secure the win.
Boone Central/Newman Grove shot 50 percent overall from the field (21-of-42) and 50 percent from the three-point arc (4-of-8). Two keys to the victory were the Cards’ advantages in points off of turnovers (24-9) and rebounding (30-25).
Jessie Sullivan muscled his way to 21 points to lead BC/NG. Derek Stuhr tallied 11, Cody Nelson and Dylan Gentrup seven apiece, Tanner Schafer six and Carter Henry five.
Boone Central/Newman Grove hosted Lakeview Saturday for its home opener and stifled the Vikings in a 58-30 rout.
Harrassing Lakeview with swarming full and three-quarter court defense, BC/NG burst to an 18-4 first-quarter lead and was never threatened from there. The Cardinals had a 29-7 bulge at halftime and led 46-14 after three quarters of play.
Sullivan again led balanced scoring with 14 points. Gentrup added nine, Stuhr eight, Nelson six, Dalton Wagner five and Schafer four. In all, 11 Cardinals scored at least two points in the game.
