The Boone Central/Newman Grove wrestling team traveled to York Thursday and engaged in dual competition with the host Dukes that was much more competitive than the 51-25 score would indicate.
The Cardinals very nearly equaled York in matches contested and BC/NG Coach Dale Bonge was pleased with the improvement shown by his squad.
“For the first time this year we were at full strength. In contested matches, the meet was very competitive,” Bonge commented. “York won six matches to our five. That made the score without forfeits 33-25. Not being able to fill three weight classes and giving the other team 18 points is hard to overcome in dual meets.
“Up and down the lineup we showed improvement and tenacity, whether we won the match or lost.”
Boone Central got wins from Will Grape, Garrett Cornwell, Trey Schafer, Bryton Fowlkes and Jesse Osantowski.
“Will started us off on the right foot with a quick pin. Garrett dominated a solid opponent and Trey continued his pin streak,” Bonge said. “Bryton had a gutsy performance, pulling out a 5-3 win.
“Jesse made his first appearance of the season a good one. He got taken down, but came back with an escape and takedown of his own for a 3-2 lead. In the second period, he put the guy on his back and secured the pin.”
