A vacant rural house and barn were used for live fire training by the Albion, Petersburg and Newman Grove fire departments last Saturday, Feb. 4. The structures, owned by John Nore, are located near the intersection of 190th Street and 280th Ave., six miles north and 2 1/2 miles east of Albion.
Fire personnel burned the barn first, followed by the house. Albion Fire Chief Bruce Benne said important training was conducted in use of air packs, team structure entry, fire suppression and ventilation.
The training included 15 members from Albion Fire & Rescue, six from Petersburg and four from Newman Grove. They were on the scene for about four hours, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Benne said training opportunities like this one are valuable, but require permits from both the Nebraska State Fire Marshal and the Department of Environmental Quality, in addition to landowner permission.
