Experience will certainly not be the strong suit of the Boone Central/Newman Grove boys golf team in 2017.
However, despite overall youth and the lack of high school varsity experience, veteran Cardinal Coach Dennis Walters says there is plenty of enthusiasm and optimism among his swingers.
“We will be young and inexperienced this year, but I think we should compete well,” Walters acknowledged.
Four letterwinners – senior Nathan Gottier, juniors Bryton Fowlkes and Garrett Cornwell, and sophomore Braden Anderson – will give Walters a nucleus to build his 2017 team around. Others who will challenge for varsity and JV roles include senior Brody Voechoski, juniors Matt Schmitz, Walker Stuhr and Mack Nelson, sophomores Garret Niewohner and Kade Noble, and freshman Kaden Olnes.
BC/NG will tee off its spring season at the Ord Invitational April 4, followed by a dual meet against Ord at the Albion Country Club Friday, April 7. The Cardinals will host 12 teams for the Boone Central Invite April 13. The Mid-State Conference championships will be hosted by Guardian Angels CC April 22 and the B-2 District tournament is slated for May 16 at the Wayne Country Club.
