Boone Central/Newman Grove has won its share of team championships and individual medals in the annual Mid-State Conference track & field championships, but the Cardinals came up short in their quest for gold at the 2017 event Monday. May 1.
Boone Central/Newman Grove did have four runner-up performances and 12 placing efforts overall, but no event winners in the competition at Wayne. The Lady Cardinals finished 7th in the team standings and the BC/NG boys 8th.
Although the level of success was short of recent years, Card Coach Justin DeWitt felt his charges competed well.
“I was proud of all our athletes for how they competed,” DeWitt praised. “Both the boys and the girls had 10 season bests on the day.
“Kelsey Thompson had another impressive day, placing in the 400, pole vault and 4×100 relay. Brian Mock showed great improvement in the 3200, lowering his time by over 45 seconds.”
Thompson, a sophomore, had the biggest medal haul for Boone Central/Newman Grove, taking 2nd in the 400 meter dash, running a leg on the runner-up 4×100 relay, and placing 3rd in the pole vault. Senior Dalton Wagner also won multiple medals, placing 2nd in the discus and 3rd in the shot put. Junior Jessie Sullivan was runner-up in the shot put and senior Jenna Kramer took 3rd in the high jump.
