Five Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals emerged from frenzied competition at the B-4 District track & field meet in Wayne Thursday, May 11, and will compete this weekend in the 2017 Nebraska State Track & Field Championships at Omaha Burke Stadium.
Two Cardinals brought home district gold medals, as BC/NG dominated the B-4 boys weight events. Junior Jessie Sullivan won the discus with a season-best throw of 160’3 and senior Dalton Wagner was triumphant in the shot put with a mark of 49’3. Sullivan placed third and qualified for state in the shot (47’1½) and Wagner duplicated that feat in the discus (151’9)..
Junior Cody Nelson topped his previous season best in the high jump by two inches (6’1) to tie for third place and earn a trip to Omaha. Senior Christina Stopak clocked a season best in the 3200 meter run (12:35.33), placing third and qualifying for the state championships.
Sophomore Kelsey Thompson experienced heartache and jubilation – seeming to miss qualification by one position in the 400 meter dash, then learning Friday that her time of 1:01.50 earned her a spot in the state field as an additional qualifier.
Unfortunately, heartbreak was real for Jenna Kramer. The senior tied with four other competitors in the high jump at 4’11 – the second-best height of the day behind champion Maggie Brahmer’s 5’1 – but placed fifth on number of misses and missed state qualification.
Boone Central/Newman Grove’s 2017 ‘Fab Five’ will be in action at Burke Stadium Friday and Saturday, May 19-20. Class B is in the second session Friday, beginning at 3:30 p.m. Saturday’s finals will begin at 9 a.m.
