It rained, it poured … then it rained some more.
But Mother Nature couldn’t rain out Alix Bloom’s parade
The Riverside sophomore capped a sterling spring campaign Saturday by sweeping the Class D gold medals in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes – along with placing 2nd in the long jump – and paced the Chargers to a 3rd place finish in the girls team standings of the 2017 Nebraska State Track & Field Championships at Omaha Burke Stadium.
Overall, Albion News area athletes made another strong impression at Burke in 2017. A total of 22 area qualifiers competed in 31 events, toting home 15 medals, including three golds.
Bloom loomed as one of Class D’s sprint favorites entering state competition – and she lived up to the billing.
Bloom began Friday by winning her 100 meter dash prelim in 12.53 and her 200 meter dash prelim with a 27.02 clocking. In between she leaped 17’¼ in the long jump, 2nd only to record-setter Claire Cornell of Elm Creek (18’4¾).
Bloom struck gold Saturday with impressive victories in the two sprint events, which were recorded with hand-held times when the soggy weather caused problem’s with Burke’s electronic timing system. She won the 100 dash in a season-best time of 12.2 and also clocked a season-best 25.8 in her 200 dash triumph.
