Albion Cornerstone rallied for a 7-5 victory at St. Paul in its American Senior Legion opener May 23, but fell to Palmer-Wolbach-Greeley in a Thursday slugfest at the Albion Sports Complex.
Cornerstone 7, St. Paul 5
Albion Cornerstone scored twice in the sixth and seventh innings to edge St. Paul in the 2017 season opener Tuesday, May 23.
Noah Valasek doubled home Weston Choat in the top of the sixth, then scored after a stolen base and wild pitch to forge a 5-5 tie. Cornerstone completed its rally with runs by Caden Ranslem and Matt Schmitz in the seventh, parlaying Ranslem’s leadoff single, two walks and a St. Paul error.
PWG 14, Cornerstone 9
Albion Cornerstone had the early advantage Thursday night at the Albion Sports Complex, but an onslaught of PWG runs in the final three innings produced a 14-9 victory for the visitiors.
Valasek, Gentrup, Sullivan and Ranslem all tallied in the fourth, as Cornerstone took advantage of three PWG errors. The hosts’ 7-3 lead would not hold up, however.
PWG pulled within two with a pair of runs in the fifth, then plated four in the sixth to lead 9-7. Keyed by Connor Wood’s two-run double, a five-run burst by PWG in the top of the seventh gave the visitors a 14-7 advantage. Dozler and Valasek scored in the bottom of the frame, but it was too little, too late for Albion.
