Boone Central senior-to-be Garrett Cornwell of Albion has been selected to join athletes competing in the 2017 Down Under Sports Tournaments and Games in Australia.
Cornwell will represent the great state of Nebraska on the Central Conference Wrestling team at the 19th annual Down Under Freestyle Championship, hosted on the Gold Coast of Australia in July.
The athletes involved in the international wrestling competition will depart for Australia on July 9 and spend nine days traveling, competing and sight-seeing in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast. The trip will wrap up with a three-day visit to Waikiki, Hawaii.
The wrestling competition will include beach wrestling, scheduled for July 14, followed by two days of individual and cultural dual team tournaments.
Cornwell was one of two Boone Central/Newman Grove wrestlers to qualify for and compete in the Nebraska State Wrestling Championships this past season. He won his state tourney debut in a 2-0 decision and finished the season with a 36-18 overall record in the 152-pound weight class.
