The Boone Central/Newman Grove softball team culminated an exciting and highly successful week Saturday by sweeping its way to the championship of the Boone Central Invite in Albion.
After splitting contests at David City and North Bend Central Tuesday and Thursday, the Cardinals handily defeated Madison/Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, Pierce and Polk County at the Albion Sports Complex to win their quad tourney title.
“The ladies are playing with a lot of heart and intensity,” Coach Danielle Amen praised. “Our seniors are showing excellent leadership. Each of the four ladies brings a different style of leading, and they are showing the underclassmen what we expect in our program.”
Boone Central/Newman Grove opened Saturday’s tournament by pasting Madison/Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family 15-3 in just three innings.
The Cardinals needed just two turns at bat to amass their run total. Taylor Olnes and Keiley Tisthammer paced an 11-hit attack with two apiece and BC/NG benefitted from four M/H/LHF errors.
BC/NG was efficient offensively and defensively in a 7-2 victory over a solid Pierce squad in its second game. Keiley Tisthammer earned the pitching victory, allowing one earned run on three hits and fanning five.
Boone Central/Newman Grove again needed just three innings to complete its championship run, defeating Polk County 13-0 Saturday afternoon. BC/NG exploded for nine runs in the first inning on the strength of five base hits, three walks and a Polk County error. Lauren Hedlund cracked a single and double in the frame.
