Residents, board members and the public celebrated 50 years of history at Harmony Homes in Albion last Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 6. About 60 people attended the open house.
The 40-unit HUD housing project was built in 1965-66, and opened to the first tenants in January of 1967. It is operated by the Albion Housing Authority, which has a five-member board of directors.
Current board members are Kris Schrad, Elizabeth Meyer, Ron Levander, Dennis Michael and Larry Swerczek.
Dorothy Leypoldt was the first executive director from 1966 to 1973, followed by June Doyle (1973-77), Delores Rutten (1977-80), Leah Smith (1980-94) and Gayle Olsen (1994-2013).
Tracy Lipker, the current executive director, has served since 2013.
The facility has been fully occupied since 1994, usually with a waiting list of 10 to 12 potential tenants. Harmony Homes has been listed as a HUD High Performer each year since 1996.
