The Boone Central/Newman Grove softball team bounced back from a drubbing at the hands of Wayne last Tuesday to win four of six games in a hectic week of action. With the success, the Cardinals boosted their season record to 11-8.
The start didn’t look so promising, as Wayne (19-2) clubbed BC/NG 17-0 in the opening game of a triangular at the Albion Sports Complex. The Blue Devils, one of Class C’s top teams, allowed the Cardinals just one base hit while bashing six home runs in the contest.
Boone Central/Newman Grove showed its resiliency in Tuesday’s nightcap, clipping Pierce 10-9. The Cardinals used a six-run second inning to take an 8-4 lead, went ahead 10-6 in the third, then got a scoreless final inning from pitcher Keiley Tisthammer after Pierce pulled within a run in a three-run fifth.
Boone Central/Newman Grove made Seniors/Parents Night a happy one in Albion Thursday, defeating Wisner-Pilger on Taylor Olnes’ dramatic three-run walkoff double in the seventh inning. That capped a tautly-contested affair featuring Tisthammer’s six-innings of mound work with 11 strikeouts.
Boone Central/Newman Grove opened Saturday’s Northwest Invitational with a 7-4 loss to Central City. The Cardinals were hampered by three errors that contributed to six unearned runs for the Bison.
BC/NG fought back with a solid 6-2 victory over Gothenburg in consolation play. The Cardinals did not commit a fielding miscue and took advantage of five errors by the Swedes. Tisthammer fanned 10 in the victory and allowed one earned run on eight hits. Lauren Hedlund smacked three more hits in the contest.
Boone Central/Newman Grove concluded the tourney with a wild 15-13 win over Southern Valley/Alma. The Cardinals struck early, building a 15-5 lead in the first three innings, then withstood an eight-run barrage by SV/A in the fourth and final frame. Emily Groeteke got the win, allowing seven runs (2 earned), striking out seven and walking four.
