It was all about mental toughness and inner fortitude for cross country runners competing in Friday’s Boone Central Individual Invitational at the Albion Country Club.
Boone Central/Newman Grove competitors showed they have more than their fair share of mettle.
Cardinals swept the top spots in the varsity races, as well as the girls junior high race, BC/NG took first place in the girls team standings, and the Cards placed third in the boys competition.
“This meet turned into a survival march, rather than a race!” exclaimed Card Coach Tom Dickey. “It was much too hot to expect kids to do any serious competing.
“Regardless, our kids really listened and were prepared to run the races correctly. This showed with the team results. I’m seeing improvement at every level, and should be seeing a big jump as soon as we get a bit of favorable weather.”
Once again, freshmen led the way for the Cardinals Friday.
Jordan Stopak captured her first high school gold medal and was the #1 freshman runner with a time of 20:09. Frosh Sam Weeder was second among freshmen and overall in 20:11, and freshman Autumn Simons placed 12 overall (5th among freshmen) with a 21:50 clocking.
Another BC/NG freshman, Jonny Lindgren, won the boys race with a time of 17:09. Alicia Weeder (9:17) took first in the junior high girls event and Gavin Ienn (9:03) was fifth among junior high boys.
