Albion News, Petersburg Press garner awards in state contest

Albion News and Petersburg Press were again among the winners in the 2018 Better Newspaper Competition announced Saturday night, April 21, at the Nebraska Press Association awards banquet in Lincoln.
First, second and third place winners were announced, with more than 160 journalists attending.
More than 3,800 separate entries from 2017, representing nine dailies and 65 weekly newspapers, were recently judged by members of the Texas Press Association. Before the banquet, two days of seminars dealt with current and projected issues facing the newspaper industry.
Albion News, Class C-circulation 1,500 to 2,499, received 11 awards.
Jim Dickerson won a first place award for Breaking News Photo for his entry entitled, “Fighting Fire” (at Bosselman’s). The judge said, “The action in extinguishing a sign fire might not be as spectacular, but this is a beautiful photo with the back lighting of the water spray soaking the fireman.”
The Albion News staff won six second place awards.
Joe Flanagan won a second place award for a Sports Action Photo entitled “Kick Slide.” The judge commented, “Timing and positioning give this shot its moment of truth. Great shot. Almost impossible to predict the possible, but choosing to shoot can often capture the unseen in the moment that is often revealed upon review. “Record the moment.”–Alexander Graham Bell. Well done.”
