Strong competition will often bring out the best in athletes.
Such was the case for Boone Central/Newman Grove track and field competitors Thursday in the Dave Gee Invite at Grand Island Northwest.
In a tough field of athletes, the Cardinals had three gold medal performances and racked up an array of season bests.
“Finally, a day where the sun was out, and our kids performed well!” Card Coach Kris Pestel exclaimed. “This was a very large and extremely competitive meet, but our young teams were up to the challenge. I was proud of the way the kids performed. They didn’t shy away from the challenges, but instead stepped up to them.
“The boys had 13 season bests and the girls had 16. Now, we must keep working hard. We’re looking forward to seeing how we can do at the conference meet this weekend.”
Senior Jessie Sullivan had a banner day at Grand Island, reaping gold medals in the shot put (52’6) and discus (166’3) events with Albion News area 2018 season best marks. Freshman Jordan Stopak lowered her area best times in the distance events, winning the 3200 meter run (12:02.46) and placing second in the 1600 meter run (5:39.65).
Senior Cody Nelson was busy and productive, placing second in the 200 meter dash (area best 23.55) and high jump (6’), fourth in the 100 meter dash (11.83), and sixth in the 400 meter dash (54.86). Freshman Samantha Weeder lowered her area best mark in the 800 meter run (2:26.88) while placing second and Jonny Lindgren chopped nearly 20 seconds off his area leading time in the 3200 meter run (10:32.55), placing third.
Boone Central/Newman Grove will compete in the annual Mid-State Conference Championships Saturday at Hartington (10 a.m.).
