On to state!
The Boone Central/Newman Grove girls and boys took advantage of prime running weather and a home course edge at the Albion Country Club Thursday, qualifying for the 2018 Nebraska State Cross Country Championships with runner-up finishes in C-2 District competition.
With Jordan Stopak winning the gold medal in record time, and fellow sophomore Samantha Weeder placing fourth, the Lady Cardinals scored 33 points and placed second to a strong Scotus (21) squad. Card sophomore Jonny Lindgren was the individual runner-up in the boys race and soph Bradley Schindel placed fifth, as BC/NG (47) just missed knocking off Scotus (46).
Needless to say, Cardinal Coach Tom Dickey was elated with the efforts and performances by his runners.
“This was obviously a really great day for our program – the kids all ran with real passion!” Dickey exclaimed. “I was extremely proud of them. This is the first year since 2013 that we have qualified both the girls’ and boys’ teams for the state meet.”
As has been customary this season, Stopak and Weeder separated from the pack early in Thursday’s race and ran free in front. Stopak charged to the first place finish, setting a new school and course record of 18:53 in the process. Weeder stumbled and fell several times late in the race, but collected herself and was still able to snare fourth place (20:07).
That set the stage for the BC/NG boys – and the Cardinals produced a bravo performance.
Lindgren led the way with his best performance of a season set back by early illness, clocking 16:42. Schindel set a personal best with his time of 16:57, as did Scott Wright (17th, 18:00) and Gavin Ienn (23rd, 18:06).
“The boys just plain ran their hearts out!” Dickey praised. “There was really no way we should have been running with Scotus – the last time we’d faced them, they had beaten us by 30 points! But, by sheer will they scrapped and clawed their way into the race, ending up just a point shy of the championship!
“It was extremely impressive to see just how far these kids have come this season.”
