David City Aquinas was highly ranked in preseason wrestling ratings. The Monarchs showed why Thursday night at Newman Grove, handing a young Boone Central/Newman Grove squad a 50-25 dual loss in the opening action of the 2018-19 season.
Beginning at 138 pounds, Aquinas bolted to a 24-0 lead with two pins and two forfeit victories, leaving the Cardinals trying to crawl out of the point hole the remainder of the competition.
“The guys fought a tough Aquinas team that is currently rated sixth in the state. The dual was up and down at times, but we could not hang with their depth and style of wrestling,” BCNG Coach Josh Majerus commented. “We started off slow and had opportunities to keep the dual close, but as a team just gave up too many unnecessary points to give Aquinas momentum.”
Majerus did find bright spots in the efforts by his team, which is inexperienced overall.
“It was nice seeing some kids wrestle for the first time this season and actually score a lot of points,” Majerus said. “We even lost some matches where we scored a lot, but gave up more. We can clean that up.
“It was good seeing some of the seniors gut through tough matches and find the win at the end. That is a tough challenge for this early in the season, but it really shows us what we need to work on.
“We lost a few matches we shouldn’t have. Given, that if we win them like we will, the dual becomes a lot closer. Thats shows us where we stand in Class C.”
Cardinal senior Jon Merten was dominant in a 13-5 victory at 220 pounds. In a very competitive match, senior Ethan Dozler got a late pin (5:47) over Ben Kment at 170 pounds. A third senior, Tyson Haddix, closed the dual with an exciting 7-6 decision over Cameron Schrad at 132. Also getting victories with forfeits were freshman Gavin Dozler (106) and sophomore Aaron Saldana (126).
