Even shorthanded, the Boone Central/Newman Grove Cardinals placed fourth in the 2019 Mid-State Conference Wrestling Championships at Wayne Thursday.
Seniors Jon Merten and Dalton Rasmussen capped the Cardinals’ day by winning conference championships at 220 and 285 pounds, respectively, and BCNG had six wrestlers take the medal stand overall.
It was a day of encouraging signs for Card Coach Josh Majerus, as Boone Central/Newman Grove points to looming district competition this weekend.
“Not a bad day for the Cardinal wrestling team. We had two conference champs and six medalists,” Majerus ackowledged. “We finished fourth in the team race without Ethan Dozler at 160 and Richard Cleveland at 182.
“The team is really starting to peak at the right time. It was nice seeing Tyson Haddix have a great day, coming in unseeded and going 4-1 on the day. Jon beat Battle Creek’s rated 220 dominantly.”
Battle Creek (224) pulled away to win the Mid-State team championship, followed by Pierce (175).
