Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family – one of the top Class D1 girls basketball team all season – earned a berth in the 2019 Nebraska State Basketball Tournament with a 53-43 victory over stubborn Hartington-Newcastle Friday at Norfolk.
The D1-5 District championship gives Humphrey/LHF a return ticket to the state capital. The Bulldogs, who dropped a tough 67-64 decision to eventual champion North Central in the first round of the 2018 state tourney, hope to make a deeper run this time around.
“Last year, that left a bad taste in their mouths,” HLHF Coach Kandee Hanzel told media members after Friday’s win, “Now, they’re hungry.”
The Bulldogs improved to 21-4 with a convincing performance at the Northeast Community College Cox Activities Center. Humphrey/LHF used a 12-3 run in the first half to take 31-22 at intermission, then outscored Hartington-Newcastle (17-8) 14-2 to begin the second half.
