It was a very solid debut season for Boone Central/Newman Grove wrestling coach Josh Majerus.
Majerus, a Boone Central graduate, had great success on the mat during his career – high school state medalist, college national champion, unbeaten Cornhusker State Games champion – and has translated his skill to the coaching position.
After starting and building the Twin River Titans’ program from scratch, Majerus took the reins of a proud Cardinal program from decorated Coach Dale Bonge, and did not skip a beat.
Despite inheriting a team short on experience, Majerus led BCNG to a Class C Top 10 finish at the 2019 state tournament, which he says will be an annual goal for the Cardinals.
There are no secrets to Majerus’ own success – or that of the teams he has coached. Dedication, hard work, effort. Then more hard work and effort.
“The boys peaked at the right time and had a great season,” Majerus praised when assessing his first Card campaign. “I’m looking forward to working with the next group and getting them ready for next season. It is important to get as much mat time in this spring and summer as possible. That off-season time is when winter champs get good.
“We will lose five great senior leaders who I wish the best for in their next journeys. The juniors need to step up and the 12 returning wrestlers will need to start focusing in on next season. I encourage them all to participate in track and field, lift weights and get in the wrestling room occasionally.
“I also want to thank all the supporters and wrestling fans for their continued support,” Majerus stated.
