Albion Country Club Golf Professional Bryan Hughett has done it again.
Hughett, PGA of Norfolk and professional at the ACC, won the Nebraska Senior PGA Professional Championship Tuesday, July 9, at Happy Hollow Golf Club in Omaha.
This wasn’t a novel experience for the experienced Hughett. The 2019 championship was his fourth victory in six appearances in Nebraska’s premier event for 50-and-older PGA golf professionals.
Hughett carded a one-under par 141 in the 36-hole tournament, finishing two shots in front of Omahan Ted DiGiacomo.
Although not Hughett’s first championship win, it was a noteworthy victory for him.
“This was the strangest win I’ve ever had in a golf tournament. I’d never won before when I was not really hitting the ball well,” Hughett said. “I’ve won when I was playing well, but this was the first time when I haven’t hit the ball well, but was able to just get the ball in the hole.
“For that reason, this was a very gratifying win for me.”
Hughett shot a 72 in Monday’s opening round and trailed DiGiacomo, who carded a 69, by three strokes. It didn’t take long for the leaderboard to change, however. On Tuesday’s first hole, DiGiacomo double-bogeyed, while Hughett birdied, for a three-shot swing.
Hughett and four other Section PGA Professionals now advance to compete Oct. 3-6 in the 31st Senior PGA Professional Championship. The National Championship will be held at Omni Barton Creek Resort and Spa in Austin, Texas.
Hearn, DiGiacomo, Peterson and Jim White, PGA of Lincoln and multi-time winner of the Nebraska Senior championship event, will join Hughett in Austin.
