Cards boost diamond mark to 5-2

Boone Central topped off a strong 3-1 week of action by dispatching two Boone Central Invitational foes by a cumulative score of 28-0 Saturday at the Albion Sports Complex.
Despite the gloomy weather conditions, it was a brilliant day for the Cardinals, who blanked Pierce (12-0) and Polk County (16-0) in the Invite event (which became a triangular with the late withdrawal of Aquinas).
Boone Central opened with Ashtyn Hedlund firing a three-inning no hitter against Pierce, striking out five of the nine batters she faced.
Boone Central’s second game of the day was more of the same, dispatching the Polk County Slammers 16-0 on the strength of Brooke Groth’s superb pitching and a 13-hit attack.
Boone Central opened the week with a 4-1 victory over Blue River at David City before dropping a tough 7-6 decision at North Bend Central Thursday.
“I thought the girls played well all week,” said Boone Central Coach Jeff Hrabik. “Defensively, we had solid efforts in all four games and our pitchers were especially efficient. Brooke pitched seven innings in 60 pitches, with 51 strikes, against Blue River, which is phenomenal. Ashtyn completely shut down Pierce. Offensively, Avery had a great week with a triple and two home runs. Lauren was her usual self, going 7-of-14 with three triples, a double, six runs and seven RBI, all while playing great defense.”
