The Boone Central boys track and field team does not have a long list of past accomplishments on its collective resume.
Instead, the young Cardinals are busy looking to the future and preparing for the upcoming season.
Boone Central returns just seven lettermen in 2008 – and only one of those athletes is a senior.
“We are very young and inexperienced,” acknowledges Card Coach Tom Dickey. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to build around a few veteran competitors and develop our younger kids as the season progresses.”
Dickey and assistants Kris Pestel, Mike Kennedy, Justin DeWitt and Aliscia Benes will use lettermen Dustin McBride, Kalvin Zoucha, Dusty Dozler, Cody Baker, Nathan Olson, Dustin Christo and Kevin Carder as a nucleus this spring.
Boone Central’s girls track and field team approaches the 2008 season young, but optimistic – paced by several key returning 2007 medalists.
The Cardinals have 12 returning letterwinners, but just one senior on the spring roster. BC does have some intriguing talent, however, led by two returning state meet qualifiers and two additional medalists from 2007 conference and district competition.
“We are definitely a younger team, so experience and physical development will be real keys,” says Cardinal Coach Kris Pestel.
Pestel will be assisted by Tom Dickey, Aliscia Benes, Mike Kennedy and Justin DeWitt and will build the 2008 squad around letterwinners Ashlynn Bader, Paige Kolm, Chancee Nolan, Danielle Olson, Melissa Smith, Emily Wells, Savannah Baker, Megan Bygland, Erica Carder, Alicia Getzfred, Kayla Kettelson and Shelby Travis, augmented by a strong freshman class.
