Molly Paul of Cedar Rapids and St. Edward’s Shavontae Samuels each won two gold medals in the 2008 Goldenrod Conference track & field meet April 24 at Burwell and Brandon Ray of Spalding/Spalding Academy won one event championship.
In the team races, Cedar Rapids finished third in girls competition behind Burwell and Nebraska Christian. Spalding/Spalding Academy took fourth in the boys division, also won by Burwell.
Paul won the discus competition with a throw of 113-5 and captured the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.6 – just a tenth off her 2008 Albion News area best mark. Paul also placed fourth in the 200 in 27.6.
Samuels topped strong fields in the 100 and 200 dashes, edging SSA’s Corey Thome in the 100 (11.3) and nipping Grant Gebhardt of North Loup/Scotia in the 200 (22.5). Samuels was runner-up to Gebhardt in the 400 dash (50.9) and established News area bests in both the 200 and 400.
Ray won the 3200 meter run with a 10:57.0 clocking and placed fourth in the 1600 in 5:24.0.
