Cards Strike Gold In Mid-State

Cody Baker (l) battles Koehlmoos in 200On a cool, but sunny and dry day Monday at Wayne State College, four Boone Central athletes were crowned event champions in the 2008 Mid-State Conference track & field meet.
The meet had been postponed Saturday due to cold, wet weather conditions. Athletes took advantage of the improved elements Monday to turn in some stellar efforts – typical of the Mid-State championships.
A young Boone Central girls team had an especially impressive day that was lauded by Coach Kris Pestel.
“It was the first day of good weather we’ve had for a meet this year and the girls really got after things,” Pestel commented. “As a coaching staff, we were very proud of how the girls competed.
“We finished third behind conference track powers Pierce and Norfolk Catholic with 91 points and were able to score in 12 of 17 events.
“We had conference champions in Megan Bygland, Ashlynn Bader, Halie Smith and Sara Wells, which was outstanding.”
Pestel noted that the Cardinals had 21 personal-best efforts in the meet. They established new 2008 Albion News area bests in five events.

An even younger BC boys squad did not have any event champs Monday, but produced several solid placing performances and finished fourth in the team race with 35 points.
“I was really happy with our efforts,” praised Card Coach Tom Dickey. “The kids worked extremely hard and I thought they were well rewarded with the fourth-place finish.”
Dickey said the Boone Central boys recorded 19 2008 personal bests during the competition.
