Shavontae Samuels sprinted to three gold medals to highlight the annual St. Edward Invitational track & field meet Wednesday, April 30, at the Boone Central athletic field in Albion.
Burwell captured the girls team title in the large 15-team event and High Plains won the boys championship. Among Albion News area schools, Cedar Rapids placed third in the girls division and Spalding/Spalding Academy took fifth among boys teams.
Samuels rolled to an easy victory in the 400 meter dash (51.6), defeated area rival Corey Thome of Spalding/Academy by three-tenths of a second in the 200 dash (23.3) and nipped North Loup-Scotia’s Grant Gebhardt at the tape in the 100 (11.1).
SSA’s Brandon Ray ran away from the field in the 3200 meter run, winning in 10:53.4, and Thome added a runner-up finish in the triple jump (39-8) and third place in the 100 (11.4) to go with his second place in the 200 (23.6).
Molly Paul of Cedar Rapids led News area girls, capturing the discus with a school record throw of 116-5½ and winning the 400 meter dash in a News area 2008 best of 1:02.
Calen Choyeski of Cedar Rapids took first place in the long jump with a mark of 14-10 and Spalding/Academy’s Tara Cockerill uncorked a 2008 area best throw of 34-8 to win the shot put.
