Cedar Valley All-Stars Shine in Tourneys

The Cedar Valley All-Stars softball team continued an extremely successful summer in league and district tournaments in recent weeks.
Cedar Valley finished as runners-up at the C-5 18 & under District Tournament in Grand Island June 20-22, earning a berth in the Class C State Tourney.
The All-Stars also finished their 2008 Mid-Nebraska League regular season schedule undefeated and capped league play with the Mid-Nebraska Tournament championship.

Cedar Valley opened the C-5 District Tournament with a tough 10-6 loss to Babel Agency of Wood River/Cairo. The contest was close throughout, with Wood River/Cairo scoring five runs in the fifth inning to break a tie score. After two easy victories in the losers bracket, C.V. reached the championship round with a solid 6-2 win over Rising City. That set up a rematch with Wood River/Cairo and an even better game than the tourney opener – a 12-10 Wood River/Cairo extra-inning victory. The teams battled back-and-forth, swapping the lead in the second, third and fourth innings as Wood River/Cairo took a 5-3 edge. Trailing 9-3 in the sixth, Cedar Valley closed to within a run as Kenzie Pelster, Jamie Crouse, Rudi Sup, Lindsay Temme and Tara Doughty crossed the plate. Wood River/Cairo added a run in the seventh, but the All-Stars pushed Pelster and Crouse across to force extra innings. Wood River/Cairo finally closed out the championship with two runs in the eighth.

Cedar Valley began play in the Mid-Nebraska League Tournament with a 12-6 win over Sargent. The All-Stars broke open a close contest with five runs in the fourth inning. C.V. used an eight-run second inning to spark a 12-2 rout of Ord #2 in the second round, then blasted Ord #3 17-1 in its third tourney game. Doughty and Sarah Buettner each scored four runs in the latter contest. That set up a championship showdown with Ord #1 and a 6-3 victory for the All-Stars. Cedar Valley scored all six of its runs in the third inning – Temme, Calen Choyeski, Pelster, Sup, Crouse and Missy Zoucha crossing the plate.
Zoucha held Ord #1 to just a single run in the fifth and two in the seventh to earn the victory. She collected all four wins in the league tournament.

The Cedar Valley All-Stars will play in the Class C 18 & under State Softball Tournament July 11-13 in South Sioux City.
