Although team scores were not great for Cardinal squads in Friday’s Boone Central Invitational, individual runners began the 2008 season with numerous personal-best efforts.
“I was really excited with our individual results,” praised Card Coach Tom Dickey. “Although they didn’t add up to good team scores, I was pleased with the efforts, especially considering many of the kids had not run a cross country race before.
“I have to mention the top runners from each race as our highlights for the day,” Dickey said. “Halie Smith not only knocked 2:19 off her personal best, but ran the third best all-time school mark for girls and ranks second among senior girls.
“Kevin Carder’s time was 40 seconds under his previous best – moving him into sixth all-time on our present course and fifth among junior boys.”
Smith’s 16:51 clocking was good for sixth place Friday in a race dominated by Columbus High runners. The Discoverers ran away with the girls title, scoring 17 points to 41 for runner-up York.
On the boys side, York easily topped Columbus (28-53) and Boone Central placed sixth (97). Carder led the way for the Cards, finishing fifth in 16:17.
