Following up a 6-0 start to the 2008 season, Boone Central’s volleyball team posted a 3-2 record against quality competition this past week.
The Cardinals opened their week with a split in triangular play at Norfolk Catholic Thursday, then won 2-of-3 matches for third place in Saturday’s Central City Invitational.
Boone Central opened play at Norfolk Catholic September 18 against Madison, dominating the Dragons 25-18, 25-14.
“This was a good learning match for our entire team,” noted Cardinal Coach Erin Eickhoff. “We were able to get playing time for all 12 girls and see how they all worked together in game situations. The girls coming off the bench stepped up and put some points on the board. I was happy to see the team unity carry over from the practice court to the game. It’s fun when all the girls can contribute in a win.”
The Cardinals gave a great effort against always-strong Norfolk Catholic on its home court, taking the Knights to the limit in a 25-21, 25-27, 14-25 loss.
“The girls played great,” praised Eickhoff. “We played them close and made them earn the win. It was our toughest match yet and we made a lot of fundamental errors. We missed too many serves and made some unnecessary hitting errors. I know we can bounce back and move forward.”
The host Central City Bison were after revenge after losing to the Cards in the previous week’s Boone Central Invitational and defeated BC 25-13, 25-21 in an early-morning match in the Central City Invite Saturday. The Cards rebounded to defeat Raymond Central 25-19, 20-25, 25-9 with a very strong third game. Boone Central finished its day with a dominant 25-18, 25-11 victory over Centura for third place.
