Pheasants Forever hosts Mentor Hunt

Boone County Pheasants Forever hosted its seventh annual Mentor Hunt last Saturday, Oct. 4, using the Boone County Shooter’s Club range on the fairgrounds in Albion as a gathering point.

A dozen young hunters were paired with PF mentors for the day’s activities, which began with a program on hunter’s safety by Randy Pomplun, Game and Parks Commission conservation officer.

The morning also included a trip to the shooting range before the youths and mentors went to the field, where four dog handlers assisted in the hunt.

The teams hunted this year by special permission at the Dave and Patty Hellbusch farm.

After the hunt, they returned to the fairgrounds for a trap shoot, target practice, a lesson on gun cleaning, and lunch.
