Towns and cities across Nebraska have familiar family names synonymous with each community’s athletic heritage.
One such Albion family – Vic & Ann Borer and their children – were honored with the 2008 Fischer Family Award during the 15th Annual Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony September 28 at Lincoln’s Lied Center for the Performing Arts.
The NHSSHOF Foundation began the family award in 1999, honoring “strong family principles that represent much of the basis for high school athletics, with the hope current school programs may benefit from an annual example of what a family accomplished”.
The award is named for the family of Joe and Viola Fischer, originally from the St. Edward area. Their family, consisting of six boys and three girls, “exhibited many and varied contributions to high school sports in the 1940s & 50s and into the college, professional and coaching ranks, symbolic of the Nebraska High School Hall of Fame’s ideals”. Vic & Ann Borer and family are the tenth family honored with the Fischer Award. The Borer children are Paul, Ted, Tom, Mark, Pete, Tori, Beth and Jay.
