After several early losses by narrow margins, the 2008 Boone Central football team won three of four games mid-season and participated in the qualifying round of the Class C1 playoffs.
Following a loss to Hastings St. Cecelia, the Cardinals finished the season with a 3-6 record.
Boone Central had six players named to the All-District 6 first team – seniors Dusty Dozler, Kalvin Zoucha, Keir Dane Harner and Bryce Morgan and juniors Dustin Christo and Nathan Olson. Seniors Kevin Krohn, Ryan Shotkoski, Cody Baker, Dustin Martin and Issiah Bauld and junior Michael Schmitz were Honorable Mention.
The Cardinal program has announced some team awards for the 2008 season:
Captains – Dozler, Zoucha; Rhino Award – Harner; Special Teams MVP – Zoucha; Offense MVP – Shotkoski; Defense MVP – Christo; MVP Offensive Lineman – Olson; MVP Defensive Lineman – Morgan; JV MVP – Logan Frey; Scout Team MVP – Zach Wurdeman; Freshmen MVP – Colton Mazour.
For the season, Boone Central was outscored 167-111 (per game average of 18.6-12.3). The Cardinals rushed for 1324 yards in 2008 and passed for 700. BC allowed 1643 rushing yards and 837 yards through the air. Boone Central finished with 119 first downs to 114 by opponents. The Cardinals forced 20 turnovers while committing 16.
Dozler led BC rushing with 356 yards on 70 carries (5.1 per attempt). Harner finished with 302 in 69 attempts (4.4) and Baker gained 291 on 61 totes (4.8).
Shotkoski completed 59-of-129 passes (45.7 percent) for 618 yards, four touchdowns and six interceptions.
Zoucha was the leading receiver, snaring 26 passes for 304 yards and three TDs. Baker, Martin and Harner caught seven passes apiece.
Zoucha was the leading scorer in 2008 with 24 points. Morgan scored 19 and Harner, Baker and Dozler each tallied 12.
Morgan was 10-of-11 kicking extra points and hit 3-of-3 field goal tries. Zoucha averaged 35.6 yards on 39 punts.
Olson led Boone Central tacklers with 75 total stops. Christo was in on 73 tackles, Harner 67 and Zoucha 60. Unassisted tackle leaders were Olson and Zoucha with 29 apiece and Harner with 27.
Morgan finished the campaign with three sacks and Zoucha registered 2.5. In tackles-for-loss, Olson led with eight, Morgan made 7.5 and Zoucha 5.5. Christo led the Cardinals with four fumble recoveries, while Zoucha and Shotkoski each made three interceptions.
