Veteran Coach Dale Bonge and the Boone Central wrestling team have been busy the past several weeks preparing for the 2008-09 season with a cast that includes two returning state tournament qualifiers and many new characters.
Of Boone Central’s 19 wrestlers competing this season, 10 were not on the squad in ‘07-08.
Bonge does have great Cardinal tradition, the two state qualifiers and seven lettermen overall with which to build his latest mat edition, however.
“We only have the two state qualifiers back in Tyson Martin and Kevin Krohn, but veterans Tyler Iverson and Kaleb Carey also devoted substantial extra time toward improvement in the off-season,” Bonge noted recently. “There are many new faces on the team, but just three freshmen, all at 103 pounds.
“The other newcomers to this year’s team – Harner, Matchett, Bower, Anson, Anderson, McLean and Lindgren – return to the mat after not wrestling in the past year or more.”
Spearheading the Cardinal effort this season will be senior Dustin Martin, a two-time state meet qualifier who compiled a 24-16 record in 2007-08. Also returning is senior state qualifier Kevin Krohn, who came on strong at the end of a 20-23 campaign a year ago.
Others who saw considerable varsity action last season were three-year senior lettermen Kaleb Carey (15-14) and Drew Bonge (1-25) and two-year senior letterman Tyler Iverson (17-16). Also lettering in ‘07-08 were Issiah Bauld (7-25) and Josh Fajman (2-18).
Following is Boone Central’s projected weight line-up:
103- Jacob Meyer (9), Bobby Stopak (9) or Mitchell Patzel (9); 112 – Jacob Anson (12); 119 – Josh Fajman (12); 125- Mark Bower (12); 130 – Kevin Krohn (12); 135 – Kaleb Carey (12); 140 – Glen Matchett (12) or Jacob Lindgren (10); 145 – Drew Bonge (12) or James O’Brien (10); 152 – Tyler Iverson (120); 160 – Jon Christo (10), Jerad McLean (11) or Tanner Anderson (10); 171 – Dustin Martin (12); 189 – Issiah Bauld (12) or Keir Dane Harner (12); 215 – Bauld or Harner; 285 – Curtis Pribnow (10).
Boone Central opens the 2008-09 season with a home dual vs. David City Aquinas Thursday, Dec. 4, before traveling to O’Neill for its first tournament action Dec. 6. The annual Mid-State Conference tourney is slated in Norfolk Feb. 7 and BC will compete in the C-3 District meet.
