To say the Boone Central girls basketball team got the 2008-09 season off to a fast start might be an understatement.
The experienced Cardinals used a 37-13 second-half blitz to race by host Hartington Cedar Catholic 57-33 Friday, Dec. 5, then blasted Lakeview 71-18 Saturday in Albion.
Cardinal Coach Mike Kennedy acknowledged his team’s impressive beginning and hopes to keep building on that momentum.
“Our kids are practicing and playing hard and developing confidence,” Kennedy commented. “We look forward to some tough contests this week against Pierce and Central City.”
It’s always a challenging assignment opening a season on the road in the Mid-State Conference, but after a sluggish start, the Boone Central girls proved more than equal to the task Friday at Hartington.
After playing to a 20-20 halftime deadlock, the Cardinals soared out of the locker room with a 20-4 third-quarter run and posted a 57-33 victory over the host Lady Trojans.
Bobbi Beckwith (12) and Stephanie Paulson (10) led balanced BC scoring that saw 10 players net points. Beckwith also grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out six assists and Paulson made four steals.
Boone Central clamped down defensively on visiting Lakeview Saturday, exploded for 26 second-quarter points and thoroughly dominated throughout a 71-18 victory over the Viqueens.
“Our defensive pressure really prevented Lakeview from getting into their offense and forced them into settling for long jump shots,” praised Kennedy. “We again did a nice job rebounding the basketball.”
Julia Temme paced another balanced scoring column with 14 points. Brittany Luettel pulled down seven rebounds and made four steals, while Erica Carder dished out five assists.
