Another game, another win. But certainly not ho-hum.
In perhaps its most impressive performance during a 5-0 start to the 2008-09 season, the Boone Central girls basketball team toppled the Twin River Titans 48-39 Tuesday, Dec. 16, in Albion.
After trailing at halftime of an intense, physical contest, the Lady Cardinals used a strong finish to secure their fifth straight victory, outscoring the visitors 17-7 in the fourth quarter.
“This was a great win for our team,” praised Cardinal Coach Mike Kennedy. “Twin River has a very big, talented and experienced basketball team.
“It took a very persistent and intelligent effort to beat this team. I was pleased with how we defended and how well we rebounded the ball at both ends of the court.”
Kennedy felt his team took positive steps while facing its toughest competition of the young season.
“We made a nice run in the fourth quarter by getting good shot attempts, playing great defense and rebounding,” he noted. “I believe we made some improvement in our ball-handling and decision-making in this game and that will pay big dividends as we go forward into a tough holiday tournament and then the toughest part of our conference schedule.”
Twin River clamped down defensively in the second period, allowing BC just five points, and took a 17-15 halftime lead with some point-blank baskets in the paint.
The third quarter saw both teams get untracked offensively. Sophomore Bobbi Beckwith hit Boone Central’s only three point shot of the night and scored seven points as the Cards edged in front 32-31.
Some terrific defense and a pair of key Beckwith drives through the Titan defense for left-handed lay-ups sparked BC to a six-point edge in the final period. The Cards secured the victory with solid free throw shooting in the final minutes.
