The Boone Central wrestling team just managed to place in the upper half of the Gibbon Invite Saturday, Jan. 17, finishing fourth in the nine-team field.
Cardinal Coach Dale Bonge found some bright spots in the performance, but was a bit disappointed overall.
“We seem to be bucking trends this year,” Bonge commented. “Our performances had improved significantly in every meet since the break, which has normally been a time we’ve struggled a bit.
“Then, historically, the Gibbon meet is where we’ve stepped it up a notch. Not so this year, as we had, for us, a somewhat disappointing meet overall.
“In the final two rounds, we won only one match,” Bonge noted. “That was in our final opportunity after 13 straight losses.
“On the positive side, we pushed eight guys into the semi-finals and five made it to championship matches.
“According to seeds and statistics, we placed about where we were supposed to instead of exceeding expectations as we had hoped.”
Although the Cardinals did not have a weight class champion, they did earn five runner-up medals. Jerad McLean, Kevin Krohn, Kaleb Carey, Dustin Martin and Keir Dane Harner all placed second for Boone Central. Issiah Bauld scored that final meet victory for the Cards, taking third place.
