On Thursday, March 19 the Boone Central speech team competed at the state tournament. Competing were the OID (oral interpretation of drama) team members senior Halie Smith, juniors Kevin Carder, Andrew Texley, Miles Wynn and Lauren Bygland.
Also competing were senior Hilary Wolf in informative, junior Kayla Kettleson in Humorous prose and junior Kevin Carder in entertainment speaking.
First rounds started at 8 a.m. and went very well for Boone Central, with nerves making their presence known. Second rounds began at 11 a.m., and the team gained confidence with high hopes of qualifying for the finals.
Making the cut into finals meant they would compete against five other speakers for medals.
The stakes were raised for Kevin Carder in entertainment, where ties had increased the field to nine total finalists. Kevin competed well, speaking on Virtual Vacation Goggles, and earned a sixth place medal.
Also advancing to finals was the OID team with their performance of “Cinderella Wore Combat Boots”. They worked their magic against five other teams, earning a third place medal.
Kayla Kettelson performed “What Women Want Most” very well to earned two superior ratings in preliminary rounds.
Hilary Wolf’s well constructed informative speech on repetition also earned two superior ratings, narrowly missing first place in the second round by judges’ decision.
Overall, the day was a success, said coach Crystal Schindel, adding: “I’m so proud of the entire team for their performances all season, and I can’t wait for even more going to state next season!”
