Interest charges will apply to property taxes paid May 1 or later

Nebraska property taxpayers are no longer being allowed a “grace period” on interest charges for property taxes paid on the date they become delinquent.

First half of 2008 property taxes become delinquent on May 1, 2009.

Previously, the policy of the Boone County Treasurer’s office was to not charge interest for property taxes paid on May 1. However, a January opinion from Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning states that county officials have no authority to grant this grace period.

Taxes will actually be considered delinquent if not paid by the close of business on April 30. Therefore, interest charges must be assessed on taxes paid on May 1 or after.
